cross the oceans
hi! you may have noticed that i switched hosts from neocities to nekoweb. while my decision is somewhat motivated by Kyle Drake's stances on genAI (i have been made aware that the post is over a year old now and there's yet to be any NC updates related to AI outside of that one april fools joke, but i don't feel like waiting around until something happens), it mostly ended up being because of nekoweb's awesome features. i originally thought i wasn't going to switch, but i decided to check NW out anyway since i saw they protect sites from AI crawlers and i was blown away. even if Kyle didn't say all that stuff, i would've switched anyway.
if you're thinking about hosting on here, i would recommend checking this place out! here's what made me decide to switch.
- the anti-scraping thing, of course
- the ability to upload any file type for free (HUGE for archivescence because now i can upload the flash versions of those promo banners)
- my pages load SO MUCH FASTER. both the pages and file editor were laggy for me in NC, but now everything is much smoother for me!
- speaking of the file editor, it's amazing. you can toggle wrapping, change the font and font size, and most importantly, there's a sidebar that allows me to access my files! gone are the days of having to have 3 tabs open of just different pages. only thing is, i can't access my image files, just the pages, which sucks since it would be so useful for my archive. other than that, it's pretty much perfect. new files are also blank instead of all the crap neocities puts on it, which i love. it's annoying having to take all that out since i have to copy/paste some stuff in like my navbar and such.
- there aren't any social features. i know that's a huge turnoff for some people, but personally, i love not having to worry about view/follower counts or feel pressured to send out updates in the activity tab or anything. i can just focus on what i'm doing or what i want to do.
i will say the only thing i'm worried about is the 5k file limit (10k if you upgrade to their $3 tier) since archivescence is already about halfway through that. it wont hit that limit for a long time, but once it does i'll have to start hosting images elsewhere and start hotlinking, which is something i try to avoid (if the site im hosting on goes down, so will all those images). overall, though, i'm pretty happy with this host! it's exactly what i needed.
